No matter what they do, we are always faster.
There was a time when Greece had not had any idea of the term "animal welfare" at all. People who wanted to enjoy their retirement in the sun and emigrated to the country, were confronted everywhere with conditions which were indescribable.
The Greek bureaucracy poisoned in order to reduce the number of stray animals. Foreign animal friends established the first accommodations. Boycotted everywhere by the municipalities, only obstacles were created, never help.
At that time, Greek veterinarians - of which there were only a few - were mostly failed human medical students, which devoted themselves to the sheep and goats. Almost no one thought of the treatment of small animals. Foreign specialized veterinarians toured through the country. The people were sceptical. Today outstanding Greek colleagues take part in the Tierärztepool.
Greek official veterinarians tried to reduce the animal stocks of the "shelters" with dubious methods. Travel diseases such as leishmaniosis were abused for this. Veterinarians from abroad took urgently the animals´ blood and tested it in an approved laboratory abroad. Hardly an animal was positive.
Animal abusers get off scot-free, animal rights activists are spat at and even physically threatened.
Thousands of so-called chain dogs spend their sad existence tethered up in the wasteland exposed mercilessly to the heat and cold. Rotten leftovers not always prevent their starvation. The Greek government does nothing against it. Foreign animal rights activists bring 100 tons of food to Greece per year.
The transport of dogs from Greece to Germany takes place in specially equipped vehicles that meet all requirements and possess all permits. Have you ever seen Greek transporters loaded with sheep? Or the wooden boxes on trailer couplings, in which the hunting dogs are driven around?
In order to save animals, German animal protection associations drove dogs from Greece to Germany. At the port of Athens, they were arrested. "Self-titled bureaucratic, Greek animal rights activists" appeared and told outrageous lies. Animal testing, arms industry, fur factories.... were the key words. Most recently added: brothels. The bureaucracy stands without exception behind these native liars who could and obviously still can do what they want in their own country. Months later, the sentenced, honest, foreign animal rights activists were granted a full discharge by a court.
Delegations of "self-titled, bureaucratic, Greek animal rights activists" told lies about the handling of the animals in Germany or even travelled abroad to convince themselves. German animal rights activists or animal shelters proved each adoption, every flight, every cent, but it did not stop the lies.
All the money that has brought the animal welfare up to the current standard, never came from Greece.
Greece joined the EU. Also here, lies and cheatings were the guarantee for its accession. However, Greece did not want to acknowledge the common EU legislation. Foreign veterinarians could enforce their permits only with the help of the European Commission.
Until a few years ago, not a single municipality in Greece approved animal welfare projects. Each activity in this area was carried out by foreigners.
Already for many years, sovereign animal welfare organizations have used microchips in order to identify their animals. In Greece, there was not even a registry.
The Greek government did and does almost nothing to meet the stray animals? needs. The only thing it does, are smear campaigns against the people who do the work of the state round the clock!
"Traces" will be introduced in Europe. No matter what one thinks of this system, the question is: Who excludes itself from the outset? Greece! It instructs its veterinary officers not to issue the relevant papers. Again, the foreign animal rights activists are forced to contact lawyers and even the EU Commission.
A current example:
At Greek airports, people are arrested and sentenced to heavy fines, people who want to do nothing else than to help. Yes, they take on the task of the Greek state and what does this? It discredited every one of them.
Again, the animal protection associations have to fight back. Again, they have to spend large sums of their association funds for lawyers, money that would help much more elsewhere. Again, they have to fight against a state that thinks that it can do what it wants.
In the meantime, over one hundred animal welfare organizations oppose that state.
Thankfully, a new generation develops. A generation that disowns the old structures. People who want a change and are not ashamed of their empathy for the helpless. Often they get in trouble themselves.
Whether the new government can answer the call for justice, it has yet to prove. However, it can be sure that concerning the animal welfare all people will join for their honest goals and that, after the last decades, they will not be afraid of the future.
After a consultation in advance, the Förderverein Arche Noah Kreta e.V. participates in half of the legal costs. Our lawyer, Christina Rohde has offered to help and together we will find a solution that will end all the defamations and misgivings once and for all!
